The case of Stealth Mode Startups… To Stealth or Not to Stealth.

This is the case study of Playme AR from the day of incorporating the company to the development and the lessons learnt along the way. As with many startups pushing to promote its startups to the world being stealthy is usually not the option most take to proceed forward. This is the case for many focusing on user growth and gathering a lot of its users as soon as possible. Lets move on to the pros and cons of being stealthy.

Benefits of Stealth Mode for Startups

  1. Highly focused on development. – This is important for Playme case as our system rely heavily on the app and web app to be able to allow us to scale much faster later in stage.
  2. Better product on launch day. – There is no way to get the perfect product on launch day but having a focused team without pressure will allow you to have a ready product to serve the market. It doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of time with the customers when the basics are not done.
  3. Allowing you to lay most groundwork for future expansion. – It takes time to build something that will scale when its needed to. It makes no sense to build a product without figuring the future plans.

Disadvantages of Stealth Mode for Startups

  1. Not enough feedback to pivot or improve product. – For the case of Playme we did an early research with potential clients and even locked some into agreement and this allows us to proper build Playme to be consumer ready when we launch but it is never perfect.
  2. Giving you a false sense of security and not knowing of competitors. – Not having competitors is unhealthy as it shows there is no market yet but if its blue ocean and there is other parts of the world doing this then it is alright. Being in stealth mode is dangerous as there is no sense of urgency. Spending 2 years to build a minimum viable product or something can be seen as a bad investment. (based on certain industries)
  3. Social Media Interest. – Being stealth makes you unable to tap into the richness of social media and the fanning of word-of-mouth that your product be an answer to their pain. For Playme we were slow to move into this area that made it into a disadvantage for us.

Back in 2013 we were validating and testing out whether there is a need for an Asian Augmented Reality Creator Tool and the response was nice that we decided to move in full-time. Playme AR was in stealth mode for almost 8-10 months of properly developing and i was constantly in the hiring process with fellow local startups such as MobileAds, Piktochart, Splory, DeliveryEat and MyHero that are based in Penang, Malaysia. This caused us to focus hard to build a team that fits with the vision of Playme’s  to make an easy Augmented Reality creation tool.  Our slogan “Augmenting the things around us!”  is so that everyone can make their own AR in the comfort of their own home.

Playme AR Creator

It took us to create the tool and now we’re ready to market it out and are just the same as all other startups wondering the questions of whether being stealthy is a good thing for us. We would say it would be 50/50 for us as we need to get the basics up and running while maintaining a small degree of noise to make sure no one has forgotten about us. We had somewhat a small hype on our product but not exactly loud as well. For our case of making sure a fully functional creation tool and flow is achieved and move onto other aspects of upgrades.  Therefore we chose to remain stealth and focused on creating the tool plus with multitude of advancement of the app.

We can say we made a mistake of neglecting our online presence and not making enough impact to gather followings from interested parties. Therefore right now we are refocusing our efforts in building our online presence and moving with the local southeast asian partners to push this forward.

In summary we notice a few positive note to this is that we’ve managed to create our end product and with better upgrades to the initial plan. This allow us to build a great product to match with the growing AR industry that is going around to the world. So decide which is best for your startup and team and keep moving forward towards growing your startups or company.

What do you think of this and share on to be stealth mode or not to be stealth mode.

4 Simple Ways to Organize Google Drive

By using Google Drive, users can save their files into the cloud that consist ranging from documents (Word documents, Excel sheets, etc) to personal files such as photos, videos and so on! It’s just like your store room; you place all your stuff there without organizing it.

Since Google Drive provides multiple plans with varying storage space, it is pretty easy to clutter up your Google Drive if you just upload all your files to it.

Fret not! We present you these 4 simple ways to organize your Google Drive.

1. Check out what’s taking up space

The pie chart tells you which Google service is taking up your space

It is pretty easy to fill up a 15 GB storage space if you’re using the basic plan. Your Google Drive can quickly fill up with possibly forgotten files that you may not need anymore, so it’s better to clear off those unused files and be wiser to use your limited free space in the future.

To check out how many GBs are your Gmail, Drive and Google+ taking up, click on the “Manage” option at the bottom left corner.

If you’re using the new Google Drive layout, hover to the “Buy more storage” option at the bottom left corner and click on the “Drive” section. It will show you which files are taking up the most space.

You can also use the free app Unclouded if you have any Google Play-compatible devices; it shows you which files are taking up the most space (it can also list by category like music, pictures and so on), checks for duplicated files which might be taking up your precious space in any of your cloud storage services and so on!

2. Color-code your files

Feeling more visual? Change the color of a file for a better recognition!

If you find colors are easier to identify your folders, right-click the folder of your choice and select “Change Color.” There are 24 colors to chose from.

Now you can enjoy all those rainbow colored folders that you’ve always wanted!

3. File numbering

You can sort your files with the presented options

If you know which folders and/or files are more important or are frequently accessed; you can number them from most important to least important. Of course, don’t forget to sort your files by “Name”. So whenever you access your Drive next time, those important files/folders will show up first.

Right-click the file of your choice, click “Rename” and well, number them according to your liking. Just don’t confuse yourself with the same numbers.

4. Add star to your folders and/or files

Add stars to your folders or files to highlight it

Why does the “add star” option looks so familiar? Well that is because it is the same function from Gmail! You can star whichever files or even folders you deem as your favorite/important/urgent; by right-clicking a folder/file and select “Add star”.

Do keep in mind that the more you star different items, the less useful that option becomes. Unless, you really fancy stars on your folder/files; then you’ll hope that Google will add shining stars in the future.

Give those methods a try and you might be surprised on how all these little things do help on organizing your Google Drive!

How does Augmented Reality Work?

Computer games and video games have been entertaining us for almost 30 years, ever since PlayStation One video game console was introduced back to 1986 and was released in Japan and other countries on December 1994.

After that, computer graphics have become more advanced and developed to a high degree of complexity since then. And now, developers, engineers and researchers are obtaining the graphics out of the computer display and turn them into live direct and indirect view of physical world environments.

What is Augmented Reality?

Some people already know what AR is all about, but some of the people don’t.

This current technology, called Augmented Reality (AR) which unite the real and the virtual world by overlaying digital information on to real-world views. It enhances and creates super computer-generated contents based on the real-world environment of what we see, hear, and feel. It is almost and consider closer to the real world environment.

Augmented reality adds graphics, audio, haptic feedback and other components which related to the real world as it exists. Currently, computer games, video games and smartphones are actively the development of augmented reality. With augmented reality displays, it changes the way we view the world; which enhance and reflects the view.

How does Augmented Reality work?

AR applications are commonly use one of these two approaches:

1.  Location-based

Location Augmented Reality Playme AR

Location-based applications use the ability of a particular device to record its position in the world and then offer data that’s relevant to that location: finding your way around a city, remembering where you parked the car, naming the mountains around you or the stars in the sky. Example: Car Finder Augmented Reality

2.  Marker-based

Markers work by having software recognize a particular pattern, such as a barcode or symbol, when a camera points at it, and overlaying a digital image at that point on the screen. If the image is (3D) three-dimensional or animated, the effect is of a digital experience unfolding on the surface upon which the pattern is printed. Example: Click here

A special example would be how IKEA uses augmented reality to bring their furnitures to life using only a print of paper laying on the floor. These can be seen below, whereby a user would view the furniture from their mobile apps and decide if the furniture fits the home environment or not. The picture is placed on the floor and from the tablet users can view the life 3D model of the chair in the living room. How awesome is that?

These are all the many things that can be done with augmented reality and how it can improve the overall experience of our everyday lifestyle and also further showcasing experiences that is not possible without augmented reality!

Go around in Tokyo with augmented reality Penguins

Ever been travelling and always end up holding a map or looking at the subways map for more directions to your destination? Never be lost again if your destination is Tokyo Sunshine Aquarium. How so? Because you now have augmented reality penguins to guide you to the aquarium in Tokyo!

Sunshine Aquarium is a state of the art metropolitan aquarium located inside the Sunshine City of Tokyo. Finding your way to the aquarium can be a little tricky for foreigners and the management decided to use their main attraction “Penguins” to guide you through the busy roads of Tokyo to its doors.

Sunshine Aquarium

With this idea, they decide to tackle the geographic location challenge with a rather cute approach of using the augmented reality penguins to guide its visitors to the aquarium!

Penguins Playme AR

The app is called ‘Penguin Navi’ with the “navi” word meaning GPS for Japanese locals. The app uses a very smart idea of superimposing the reality around you with 3D penguins moving in front of you instead of arrows that we usually see in the Garmin GPS inside our cars. This idea was founded long before Playme AR was founded and really amazes the team with its simplicity and kawaii-ness.

How did they do the augmented reality penguins?

Penguins Playmear

What the AR team did was fairly simple, they set up cameras and capture the walking motion of the real penguins and  mimic them into computer generated graphic format. This allows the users to experience the augmented reality penguins walking in front of them guiding them as if the penguins were there!

Was it successful? It did increase the visitor attendance with a whopping 152% to its statistics. This is also another example how AR is changing the lives of the people in the rising sun, Japan. It is just going to get better! Stay tune!

Virtual Reality Technology VS Augmented Reality Technology

Virtual Reality Technology Differences From Augmented Reality

First before we go over to the war on which is better and more advance, lets go through a little bit of history first. Virtual reality technology and augmented reality technology does not differ much from each other. Virtual Reality Technology was first introduced in the 1860s, when a 360-degree art was painted to showcase a panoramic mural view. This is seen in the Baldassare Peruzzi‘s piece titled, Sala delle Prospettive. It is not until 1980s when Jaron Lanier coin the term “Virtual Reality”.  From that day on we can see 3D 360 view of street views by Google Street View in 2010 (Google Street View was introduced in 2007), SEGA releases the Sega VR-1 motion simulator arcade attraction in 1994 in SegaWorld.

Virtual Reality Technology

Virtual Reality Technology

Virtual reality Technology recently made famous with Kickstarter crowd funded project called Oculus Rift that was acquired by Facebook to further improve the device and inject more funds to get the VR device on the market shelf. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said “We’re going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this,” at the initial announcement. While Virtual Reality Technology sees a high interest in the gaming industry it is promoted in the movies such as Gamer starred by Gerard Butler. Virtual reality technology allows gamers to immerse fully in the digital world as if there were inside the game. This is thought of since the beginning of the 3D game creation back in the 90s.

Aside from gaming, Virtual reality technology also allows other practical implementations such as controlling robots on Mars, military training in pilots, marines and much more. In the health industries doctors can replicate complicated surgeries with virtual reality to better prepare them and also in education where kids and students can immerse in the human body to see how the heart beat and brain functions.

Virtual Reality is separate from Reality while Augmented Reality is enhancing Current Reality.

Regarding what is augmented reality, it really is digitalised reality overlaying our current reality. Just imagine Iron-Man HUD system in his iron suit and thats what it like to have augmented reality coming alive in our real life. With the amazing mobile apps allowing more augmented reality powered systems to make more things possible with augmented reality such as Wikitude, Layar, Zappar, and of course Playme AR! There is almost an unlimited possibilities to use augmented reality with the real life usage and industries.

Playme Augmented Reality Example

Playme Augmented Reality Example

Imagine the possibilities of Augmented Reality that will be able to guide you when your driving, walking towards the airport gate, through the city to find right restaurant.  Augmented reality technology is a little flexible where it does not bring the viewer to a separate reality and away from the current reality. There is also an app World Lens that translate text on the fly and is acquired by Google. With that in motion more and more developers are creating augmented reality experiences with statistics shown that AR will keep on growing.
