Power of Augmented Reality

Augmented reality has been around for quite some time. The future of augmented reality is getting hotter and will only get even hotter as time pass by.

Augmented reality is flexible and as powerful as a pen in the mind of an artist!

  • Make use of a 3rd reality.
  • More flexible than QR Code.
  • Engaging & Interactive.

The introduction of augmented reality to the world can be coined as early as 1901 by L. Frank Baum which was called as “character marker” by mentioning the idea of an electronic display/spectacles that overlays data onto real life.  Fast-forward many years later to 1980, Steve Mann creates the first ever wearable computer, a computer vision system that allows text and graphical to be overlaid over a photographically mediated reality or now as we called it “Augmented Reality”. It was ten years later that Tom Caudell a former Boeing Researcher that coined the term “Augmented Reality”.

With the introduction of “Google Glass” by Google developed by Google X overseen by Sergey Brin. Augmented Reality (AR) is getting recognition around the world with Toshiba creating their own AR glasses, Epson’s Moverio BT-200, Vuzix glasses which are gonna be launched by Lenovo in China and also worth mentioning wearable glasses startup META Spaceglasses.

Types of Industries able to utilises the augmented reality (AR) experiences.

  • Advertising / Marketing
  • Arts
  • Charities
  • Museum
  • Automotive
  • Creative
  • Education
  • Leisure, Travel & Tourism
  • Packaging
  • Publishing – Magazine
  • Publishing – Newspaper
  • Publishing – Other
  • Real Estate
  • Retail
  • Student
  • Technology
  • Others

There has been statistics that shown with AR contents with interactive contents and engagement are increased by 87% of the time. This can be Museums showcases, Arts movement to bring 2D masterpieces to life and also the tourism industries that can be alive with AR videos to showcase the Maldives or the hawaiian beaches.

What are the common uses by our customers with AR?

  • Adding interactive video on newspapers adverts.
  • Attaching videos & button links on educational books to showcase more examples.
  • 3D content of the real estate property to showcase the end results.
  • Adding a way to bring Arts to come to life with AR experiences.
  • Automotive industries can give the car subjects 3D value to proper showcase the project.

These are just a few of the unlimited possibilities of what AR can be done to bring 2D prints to a fully augmented reality experience.  So what do you think of the much more possibilities of AR, feel free to comment and share below.

“The QR code has a decade left to live” Masahiro Hara

QR code to be replaced by better image recognition softwares!

A very sentimental quote from the creator of QR code Masahiro Hara to Matthew Sparkes (Deputy Head of Technology) of Telegraph at the European Inventor Award 2014. He mentioned that better image recognition software will probably render QR code behind in the image recognition software industry. This is true as with the invent of “Google Glasses” and other exciting image recognition software like Playme AR Creator.

Masahiro Hara invented the Quick Response QR code in 1994 from a simple problem solving to the increasing amount of information needed to stored on a paper label. Traditional One-dimensional barcodes (such as the one you see in everyday products) have been around for more than two decades, however the amount of content that is able to be stored is around 20 alphanumeric characters. Mr Hara and his team, with the invent of QR were able to increase this 250 during their two years of research.

His invention did not go to vain as the world now knows the limitless capability of image recognition to be used by various industries from travel, manufacturing, education and everyday life in businesses is amazing. Playme AR was also invented to further bring the image recognition a step further, in social, advertising, education and much more. Therefore we would like to express our congratulations to Mr Hara and his team for a great invention and help shape the world we know it today.

What is Augmented Reality?

What is Augmented Reality? (Some weird stuff?)

Nah, it is actually elements that are augmented (or supplemented) by computer assisted/generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. In a more layman term, AR is to overlay the current reality with a separate reality through a computer screen or mobile screen or glasses. How is this different from virtual reality? Simple, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one such as demonstrated by games. While augmented reality is usually overlaying digital content in real-time and in relation with the environment elements such as sport scores on TV during a live match.

How many types of display is there available or soon to available?

Google Glass must be the more famous display unit since its first announced on May 2012 to show how it can be used to capture video. There are other display units available in the markets, some of the main stream ones are:

  • Mobile – viewing AR with mobile apps (Playme AR apps).
  • Glasses – Full AR capability such as Epson, Meta space glasses.
  • Head-mounted – augmented paired together with a headset or helmet. More fixed used by military and polices.
  • HUD – only augmenting a small part such as google glasses.
  • Contact Lenses (Coming Soon – In Development for US Military uses)

So now you know a little of augmented reality and how it can be view using what devices and display units used to view the AR experiences. Coming soon is the types of possible AR implementation. Have a nice day!

Playme AR is founded!

This marks an historical day for Playme AR as the three founders met together and inked the day Playme “Wia Global Technology Private Limited” was founded and inked in the Malaysia!

After Iz Phang met Alvin Ooi over a cup of “Starbucks” coffee in the cool evening night to discuss over the idea which pondered both Winson and Iz for quite some time that it came to table that they needed another co-founder to speed things up! Thus the three of them sat down and discuss over the idea that will allow users to form their own AR interactive print and experiences. They were going to start with Malaysia, Asia and then the rest of the world!

The day was 27th August 2013. After months of discussion and coffee cups through the night, Winson Tan suggested that we inked down the company and really start this venture full-time. The other two agrees and decided to fork out their investment and went ahead with the creation of Playme AR!

We want Playme AR to be able to allow users from all over the world to enjoy Augmented Reality and realise their own “AR” ideas to fruition instead of just a dream in our beautiful minds.

Since then, Playme AR has had an investor on-board and much more exciting things to come!
